It was a cold and snowy Sunday night in January. It was late in the evening, probably around nine o'clock. I was driving to work the night shift. As I traveled down the Taconic State Parkway, a particularly treacherous commuter highway in the Hudson Valley region of New York, the snow was coming down heavy and the roads were quickly becoming covered. Staying home is not an option for an EMT. The job always calls no matter what the conditions outside are.
As a native New Yorker driving in the snow was nothing new to me and besides I felt unstoppable in my reliable all wheel drive Subaru Impreza. It was a ride I had done countless times but this particular evening something rather unexpected happened.
I was traveling through a notoriously windy and narrow part of the highway with many ups and downs through the hills. This section of the journey is through a very rural area and the cell service is always a little sketchy too. I soon found myself at a dead halt, bumper to bumper with a line of traffic in front of me. Always, a wonderful sight to see when you're on your way to work.
As I sat there wondering what's the hold up, I soon got my answer when I saw flames shooting up into the sky. A car caught fire just about a quarter of a mile in front of me. With guard rails on either side, a sea of steady brake lights, and the snow continuing to poor down heavy it was quite apparent I was going to be here a while.
As all just stood by helpless and watched the car burn, soon I began to wonder how long we would be stuck here. I honestly don't remember how long it took the fire department to get there but it felt like forever. All in all, I was stuck there for over 3 hours. This situation taught me the need to be prepared when on the road because you simply don’t know the types of situations you will encounter. So the question is then, what should you have in a car kit?
I’ve prepared a list of some things you should keep in your car for those unexpected events.
Our Deluxe Auto Kit is bundled into a large nylon bag to keep all the supplies together. It fits nicely in your truck and has all the essential items you might need while traveling out and about. So if you find yourself in a similar situation like me you will be ready. A lot can happen on the road. Don’t wait until you are in a situation to think about the things you might need.
